Weekend in the Upstate

Mike had a few events planned last weekend that I had zero interest in – playing foot-golf and watching a big boxing match – so L.J. and I decided to spend the weekend in Greenville. This allowed both of us to have fun with friends/family and not leave one of us solo-parenting for long periods of time. Win-win!

We introduced L.J. to his new riding horse. Still to be determined if it will be a “cowboy horse” or a “derby horse.” What do you think?

We stopped in at Nana’s Salon for a much-needed haircut. A lollipop was the golden ticket that got L.J. to sit (mostly) still.

L.J.’s big yellow Tonka truck and beloved blue car were met with much fanfare and he played with both all weekend. There was lots and lots of playtime while we were there! Beautiful weather, too.

Nana and Poppa also added a new vehicle to the garage – L.J.’s first pseudo-Big Wheels bike. We quickly realized he was much too big for his lion ride-on, so his new bike was a special treat! L.J. was such a good helper while we put it together.

(Sniff...I remember when he was too small for his lion ride on…)

On Saturday we took L.J. to see some animals. We originally planned to go to the zoo, but upon arriving and seeing the entrance line snaking down the sidewalk, we changed course. We decided on Hollywild, a nearby animal park/sanctuary. We went once at Christmastime, and were curious to check it out during a “regular” weekend.

We had a good time! Lots of neat animals to see – including bears, a white tiger with HUGE paws, camels, a zebra and a zonkey – and we were able to feed many of them. The parameters were that we could feed just about anything that couldn’t eat us. Fair enough.IMG_5979IMG_5985

The goats were some of my favorites. The keepers said they go wild over vegetables and they weren’t kidding:

There was also a bus safari that took us through a big open area to see/feed some of the big game animals.

This was cool! Check out the rare white buffalo that practically boarded the bus:

L.J. was very interested in and curious about all the animals, but wasn’t keen on petting or feeding them. He kept saying, “I do it later.” Many of the animals were big to us, so I can only imagine how large they looked to a little one.

We were quite hungry after feeding treats to all the animals and stopped for a quick bite on the way home. The chairs at the deli were padded, and at one point L.J. leaned just a bit too far in his booster and toppled right out of his chair. It happened in a blink and startled all of us! Fortunately, he was not injured and a few hugs and kisses from mommy made things all better. We abandoned the booster and he settled in the safety of my lap. A few minutes later, in a very serious tone, he looked at my brother and said, “Be careful Tay-T!” You know, just in case J.T. was in danger of falling out of his chair too. We all got a good laugh out of L.J.’s well-intentioned warning!

Thanks for hosting us, Mom & Dad! We had a great time!
