Hannah – 12 Months

IMG_8595

Stats

Weight: 22 lbs (70th percentile)
Height: 30.5” (95th percentile)
Diaper Size: Size 3 in Huggies
Clothes: 12-month outfits (mostly) and 18-month pajamas

(Stats from 2/9/17)

A 12-month old baby wearing size 12-month clothes. That’s novel in our house! Her feet have grown a lot this month! She’s in between a 3 and a 4 depending on the brand. And her height!! They even re-measured her at the doctor because they were certain she couldn’t be in the 95th percentile. She must get that from one of her uncles!

Personality

Hannah’s personality is by turn calm/quiet and opinionated/determined. When we’re out and about or with friends, people always comment how quiet and observant she is. At home, she will contentedly play quietly with her toys for far longer than her brother ever did/does. She has a long attention span at school, we’re told.

But Hannah is anything but placid! No, there is an entire world to discover and she’s on a mission to check out every corner. Or at least our little corner of the world. Unless she is contained or in the playroom, one eye must be on Hannah 100% of the time. She is fast and gets into mischief quicker than you can blink. She is afraid of nothing and thinks she is perfectly capable of doing everything her brother can do. She could care less that he’s got 3 years of life experience on her. Thank goodness he is a cautious child by nature and doesn’t give her additional ideas for adventure!

We have definitely seen more separation anxiety this month. Hannah has thoroughly mastered clinging to us like glue while intently glaring at the person who wishes to hold/talk to/play with her. Outside of family and teachers, the one person who tends to avoid this reaction is our neighbor, Gina. Their mutual adoration of each other is really sweet.

For posterity’s sake, here’s Hannah’s famous glare:

Playtime

Musical toys are her absolute favorite – she loves anything that plays a tune. She’s learning how to clap to music! She also likes to dance to music.

She is also very enamored with L.J.’s large collection of vehicles. It’s really quite sweet to watch them sit together and play cars. Both kids are also both really into books and also enjoy reading together. I love this as you might imagine, despite the fact that because of said kids I haven’t picked up a book of my own in months…

Bathtime is the highlight of the kids’ day. We bathe them together, which works well for now. Her favorite bath toy is a blue Clinique eye makeup remover sample bottle. Completely random, but she looks for it every time she’s in the bath.

Eating

Woo hoo!!! The 10 p.m. bottle is no more!!! Big accomplishment for Hannah this month; she has eliminated her nighttime bottle. She has some milk with dinner to wrap up her evening. And – she’s omitted the bottle and sleeping through the night. (Previously, it was always a 7 p.m. bottle and/or a 10 p.m. bottle for her to make it all the way through)

Sister Bear is also making big strides with a sippy cup! She knows how to use them and we’re now working on getting her to drink from them without playing with them. In due time. She doesn’t like the ones with no-spill valves and we vowed “never again!” after straw cups with L.J. – we’ve been using the Tupperware-style Take-n-Toss cups and they’ve been great so far.

Food and Hannah get along very well and she’s always up for a meal. Pouches have been mostly phased out as well; she gets one occasionally if I feel dinner wasn’t quite enough. She’s a good eater and pretty much eats what we eat. New favorites this month are watermelon and American cheese. She does not like bananas – usually a kid favorite, but L.J. doesn’t like them either. #siblings

And – ta-da – no more formula!! Completely seamless transition to whole milk. She didn’t skip a beat. She doesn’t like milk ice cold, but other than that it’s been easy-peasy.

Sleeping

She’s my good little sleeper, and this totally benefits me since Mike gets up with L.J. and I get up with Hannah. She will sometimes sleep at late as 7:30 and occasionally until 8:00. This is also very novel in the Holmes house…and very much appreciated! She’s starting to phase out one of her two main daily naps. She seems to prefer a long morning nap and then a short cat nap late in the afternoon. We’re trying to shift this so both kids will rest in the afternoon. Moderate success thus far.

Letter to Hannah

Dear Hannah,

Happy first birthday, little one! What a year it has been! You are an absolute delight with a personality that can fill a room. You are a happy, affable baby who loves nothing more than to be with your family. You are often wary of new people, but certainly not shy about new experiences! You embody the motto “If there’s a will, there’s a way” and if I have to start dying the gray out of my hair by the end of the year, I know who to talk to about that...

You are an expert communicator even without having language skills yet. Your expressions are my favorite! In particular, your famous glare. Everyone comments on it. It is perfection. Thankfully it is usually typically quickly replaced with one of your beautiful dimpled smiles.

How I love your smile! I wish I had more recent pictures of your smile, but sweet girl, you won’t sit still for a moment! You are entirely too busy and sitting…well, you just don’t have time to waste on such nonsense.

Keep being you, Hannah. Your personality is such a bright light and is a glimpse into the unlimited potential you possess. You are amazing and we love you beyond words.

Love,
Mommy
