Family, friends and co-workers were all abuzz on January 6 because we were supposed to get snow. And not just a dusting, but 4-6 inches of the fluffy stuff. That didn’t pan out and there were a lot of disappointed faces on Saturday morning – but not in our neighborhood! We only got a dusting of snow, but it sat on top of a solid sheet of ice, creating perfect sledding conditions on the big hill outside our front door.
We bundled everyone up as best we could and headed outside. The sledding was fantastic! L.J. wasn’t too sure about the big hill. But after some time sledding on a shorter segment of the hill, he was ready to give it a try with me. We tucked into the sled and flew down the hill. It was amazing! We went down quite a few times and our ever-cautious son shouted, “Again, Mommy! Again!” each time we got to the bottom – so it must have been pretty awesome!
Hannah enjoyed it from the warmth and comfort of her stroller. It was bitterly cold (even by hardier northern standards), so we had her in about 6 layers and she wasn’t outside very long.
I literally earned the “most graceful save” of the day award. As I was sledding down a smaller hill in a disc sled, it veered off to the side and straight in the path of our neighbor’s little boy (2.5 yo). Realizing there was no way I could avoid colliding with him, I leaned forward with outstretched arms and simply scooped him up. Worked perfectly! It certainly startled him a bit, but he was safe and sound. He asked me to sled down with him a few minutes later and when we got to the bottom he looked at me and said, “I liked it much better this time!”
It was a three hat kind of day for sure!
We weren’t snowbound for the weekend, but we were certainly ice bound. Noticed the neighbor’s completely failed attempt at leaving:
The section of driveway outside our garage doesn’t get much sun and was covered in a half inch of ice. Mike spent over four hours on Sunday trying to break enough of it up so that he could get his car out!
He was successful at getting his car out, and was able to get my car out as well. Whew! Fortunately the ice on most of the other neighborhood streets was gone by Sunday, so we were able to get out of the neighborhood on Monday. Our street – the big sledding hill – stayed iced the longest.
