We made it! Congratulations to our handsome Pre-K Graduate!
Pre-K wasn’t the easiest school year for Landon. He needs consistent routine and discipline to be his best self, and his school only provided one of those two things. It was a long, hard year for everyone involved.
I came across a meme recently that describes L.J. and his school year almost too perfectly:
Me: What did you do at school today?
5-yo: Learned about dragons.
Me: Your class learned about dragons?
5-yo: I learned about dragons. I don’t know what everybody else was doing.
Landon is innately curious and enjoys learning new things. He asks questions constantly and has a long-range memory – he can recall, in detail, things that happened a year or two ago.
He loves books and going to the library, and we have started reading simple chapter books to him (Magic Tree House, etc.). He enjoys them, remembers the plot from one evening to the next, and remembers what chapter we are on.
Landon is extremely perceptive. He has a large vocabulary and can weave complex thoughts together into intricate stories, often multi-step processes about how, when and why something is going to be done. Yet, as perceptive as he is, Captain Literal is still an affectionate, and accurate, nickname.
In Pre-K this year, he mastered his alphabet, numbers and a few sight words. His favorite classroom activity was writing and his daily folder was always filled with scraps of paper with various letters on them. His preferred way of writing his name is with his initials, like a monogram.
Learning about the Statue of Liberty was his most-enjoyed theme week this year, and still gets very excited and animated anytime he sees a picture of it. Our hoped-for trip to NYC this spring didn’t happen, but L.J. is still hot on the campaign trail. (I’ve always wanted to see the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center…so maybe in the next few years we can take a trip to see both things!)
Landon enjoys learning new things and frequently comes home and shares random facts and information. His absolute favorite activity during Pre-K was computer lab. He knew not only which days his class went to computer lab, but also which order his class participated and when his turn was.
Grayson was a favorite playmate at school this year and we are bummed they won’t be Kindergarten buddies next year! L.J. has grown more confident socially this year. Two friendly boys moved in across the street and are always asking if Landon can come play – it’s been wonderful for him!
L.J.’s strong will and desire to run the show just about got the best of everybody this year. There were concerns about letter and number recognition that didn’t add up (no pun intended) given his above-average perceptiveness and reasoning skills. It was determined to be a “won’t do” not a “can’t do.” He’s a smart little cookie in more ways than one, there’s no doubt about that.
We are all looking forward to Kindergarten, L.J. most of all. He couldn’t possibly be more excited about his new adventure in elementary school! He talks about Kindergarten all. the. time. and would have had his backpack packed weeks ago if I let him.
Here’s to brand-new adventures in elementary school!
