Mobile Food

Labor Day is Monday, which means summer is officially over. How is that possible?! This summer has been a bit crazy for the Holmes family, so thanks to all who have kept reading despite the less frequent (and possibly less interesting) posts. Two vacations, two trips to Cincinnati, Mike spending 8 days in Costa Rica, work craziness…whew!

Mike’s busy season officially kicked off (literally) last night, so it’s time to adjust to our fall/winter “normal” and we’re hoping for fun adventures but much less of a whirlwind!

We might have to start doing our grocery shopping at Trader Joes and Whole Foods. Why? Because they have toddler-sized shopping carts that look the same as the regular carts. I discovered yesterday that L.J. thinks pushing a miniature shopping cart is the most amazing thing ever. He was on cloud nine and so proud to help mommy with the shopping!

He was quite distraught when it came time to check out. We made a few extra laps around the store until I spotted an empty checkout line, and even then he took off careening with the cart, narrowly missing a display of flowers.

L.J. was still pretty bummed about leaving the cart behind when we got home, and once he discovered that daddy wasn’t there…well, all was not right with the world.

I tried to make it up to him by preparing a special treat – dinner on his picnic table in front of Bubble Guppies. He was quite pleased until he realized that I had moved his play rug out of the way. Good grief does this kiddo like routine and order. I unrolled the rug and that made him happy. So happy in fact that he wanted to eat on the rug. He got up and oh so carefully carried his plate over to the rug.

Since he was occupied, I got out the broom to sweep up under his chair. Mommy mistake!

L.J. stood up and wanted to help sweep. I said no, at which point he turned around and stepped right into his plate of food. (Mommy smacks head…) He became quite perturbed when I had to take his shoe off because it was covered in sour cream and sweet potato. So perturbed, in fact, that I said screw it and let him walk around wearing one shoe and one sock. (This also bothered him, for the record. He’s very particular about his shoes.)

He was also upset because he had made a mess. He went into the kitchen, got a towel and brought it back to the rug to help me clean up. (Mommy’s heart melts…)

After we cleaned up (read: Mommy folded up the rug and threw it on the kitchen table to deal with later), I offered him some Kix in a cereal cup. He enjoyed a few Kix and then stepped backward, tripped and flung Kix everywhere.

I was not upset because it was clearly an accident, but poor L.J. was beside himself because his cereal was now spread across three counties. I cleaned up the mess, poured a new (and smaller) amount of Kix in his cup and gave it back to him.

With his refilled cup in hand, he turned to watch Bubble Guppies. However, the show had ended and he flung his arm out to indicate that to me. Yep, the arm with the hand holding the Kix. Yep, the Kix went everywhere again. Yep, L.J. got upset again.

At this point we called it a night and I put L.J. to bed. He fell asleep almost immediately…guess he played extra hard at school yesterday!

Life with a toddler is always adventure, but wanted to record this evening for posterity because it really was a comedy of errors. Some days are good, some days are hard and some days Kix hit the fan!
