Our grandfather clock is up and chiming, and now our house really sounds like home. Mike and I both grew up with clocks, and their ticking and chiming is familiar and comforting. My grandma had a grandmother clock my whole life, and my parents have had a grandfather clock for years. Mike’s parents also had many clocks in their home while he was growing up.
If I sit quietly, I can still hear the distinct sounds of my grandma’s clocks – the grandmother clock that chimed every quarter hour, the ticking of the mantel clock, the loud bong of the clock in her bedroom and even the kitchen cuckoo clock. I hope I’m always able to remember these sounds and the memories they bring back.
I don’t remember when my parent’s got their clock, but it’s been years now. They also have a wall clock that drives us nuts! It has an extremely loud chime and used to hang in the downstairs family room. Good luck hearing the last minute of your TV show with that clock. In their last house it was in the study and we always had to remember to turn the chime off before L.J. went to sleep because it hung right above his pack ‘n play.
Mike would have to write his own memories of his family’s clocks, as my memories only date as long as I’ve known him. I do remember the first time I went to his parent’s house and realized how many clocks there were! I remember thinking it was a neat connection.
The clock in our home is a very special clock. One of Mike’s dad’s hobbies was building clocks, and he built this clock as a gift for Mike. It is a cherished gift and we look forward to building our own family memories with the clock in the background. We are so happy to finally have it settled in our home!
