We went to Jeebus’ House!

Easter 2016 was a quiet one for the Holmes family. Well, it was after L.J. woke up at 6 a.m. and came bounding into our room shouting, “DID THE BUNNY COME???” Yes, for the love, he did. He also suggested you calm the crap down because the sun isn’t even up yet.

Easter isn’t Christmas Lite at our house, but L.J. and Hannah enjoyed their baskets all the same. They each got a few books and L.J. got sunglasses and a shovel and rake, much to his delight. The Easter Bunny shopped our basement for Hannah and procured Sophie and a little green teether bunny. I’m sure she will be equally excited about her treats in another month or two!

Mike had to work all day, it was rainy and gross out and it was a holiday. I was a little nervous about being cooped up with both kids for 13 hours, but we ended up doing just fine. L.J. did a rock star job playing independently for several good stretches of time and I did a rock star job of not caring how much Daniel Tiger he watched.

My big accomplishment of the day was taking both kids to church and surviving! I’ve been very gun shy about taking L.J. to church after several bad experiences, but it was Easter Sunday so off we went. I was exhausted and sweating by the time mass ended, but no one pooped, threw up, made a scene or otherwise made the Holmes family memorable for all the wrong reasons. (Ok, fine, L.J. did pull out an industrial-size bag of Skittles halfway through the homily. Parent of the Year, right there.)

In all seriousness though, it was insanely crowded and I worked so incredibly hard to keep both kids calm, contained and entertained. We had a few questionable moments and I felt like we had stuff spilling out everywhere (in our 1 square foot of space). But we did it. Hannah was a saint. L.J. was quiet and behaved himself. After mass, a lady sitting nearby told me I did a great job handling them solo and that they were so well behaved. Sometimes it’s just really nice and really reassuring to have someone recognize the effort you put into something.

The mass was more contemporary than I typically care for, but the song selection was awesome and L.J. loved the music and the instruments. He stood up for each song and danced in the pew. It was so adorable and such a sweet memory to file away.

After mass, L.J. earned his rewards of a trip to the (pollen-covered) playground and a trip to Dunkin Donuts. Ok, the Dunkin Donuts was mostly for me. And wouldn’t you know? I pulled up and not only was my absolute favorite croissant donut back on the menu, but now it was a strawberry shortcake version with pink icing. I’m pretty sure that was God’s way of saying, “Good job, Mama!” And it was so good. Maybe I even licked the leftover icing off the box. Home run, DD!

After a bad day of women’s golf, Mike returned home just in time for dinner. Honey Baked Ham for the win. Did you know they serve ham by the slice? A pricey, jumbo-sized ham wasn’t what we needed this year, but we did want our favorite Easter treat. We were able to purchase a 1-lb package of ham, which we got two meals out of. Home run, HBH!

Happy Easter from the Holmes family!

P.S. – Yes, L.J. still refers to Jesus as “Jeebus.” And church made an impression on him because in the several days following he asked when we were going back to Jeebus’ house to see the instruments and hear the music.
