Landon – 5 Months Old

IMG_1281

Landon is 5-months old! He’s growing and changing rapidly, with each day bringing a new development or discovery. Some are big, some are small and all are exciting to see!

Weight: Approx. 18-19 lbs.
Diaper Size: Size 3 in Pampers
Clothes: Fully into 9-mos clothes. 12-month jammies are on the horizon.

Personality

I feel like a broken record, but each month it really is the same – L.J. is as sweet, happy and mellow as babies come. It’s actually startling when he cries because it happens so rarely. He is very observant and always watching what is going on around him. He continues to be social and Mike and I sometimes wonder if he gets bored on the weekend with only mommy and daddy to entertain him!

Playtime

Ah, finally, playtime has arrived! He interacts more with his toys, which means he has learned how to grab things and shove them in his mouth. Everything he can get his hands on goes straight into his mouth for exploration. We’ve discovered that he likes things that squeak.

He definitely has some favorites among his toys, with his Goodnight Moon bunny and his green starfish crinkle blanket still topping the list. We’ve bought him a few new things as we discovered that he enjoys and can play with small, lightweight rattles and teethers much better than other toys.

He has started to enjoy sitting in his little activity seat, and also enjoys sitting up on our laps. He is so close to rolling over! He can coordinate his bottom half, but not his top half (his arms get stuck). He will briefly bear weight on his legs, but he’s really not a fan of that yet.

L.J. has completely outgrown his bouncy seat. We put him in it the other day and it leaned back almost parallel to the floor. He is also very close to being done with his swing. He continues to love his Fisher Price rocker and has plenty of growing room left in that.

We read a bedtime story each night, which is one of my favorite times of the day. It’s hard to tell a “favorite” at this point, but he is partial The Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Eating

This month we moved up to the big bottles. L.J. now takes 6 oz every 4 hours. And no more night feedings! We feed him at 10:00 before we go to bed and that tides him over until 5:30-6:30 the next morning.

I’m not sure when or how to eliminate the 10:00 feeding. It’s not really a dream feed since we get him out of bed for it (he’s normally about half awake), and he will wake up if we don’t feed him.

Sleeping

L.J. sleeps through the night!! Cue the church bells and choirs!! Mommy and daddy are immensely pleased with this development. He’s also starting to go to bed a little earlier, normally in bed around 7:45.

We turn the sleep sheep on most nights. One night he was randomly wide awake after his 10 p.m. feeding. I turned off his night light, turned on his sleep sheep and said, “Lights off, sheep on…it’s time to go night-night.” He quieted down and fell asleep a few minutes later. Probably a fluke, but I like to think he is extra smart and associates his sheep with sleep.

Milestones/Firsts

L.J. learned to laugh! We heard his first laughs this month, and mommy will do almost anything to get a giggle out of L.J. I still can’t get him to laugh as hard as my dad can.

We also moved his car seat straps up one notch, which has made fastening him much easier. It was like watching paint dry waiting for him to get tall enough to move them up!

Our biggest milestone/first this month was L.J.’s baptism. That was a very special milestone! We take him to church most weekends now and he does fine. In fact, we typically sit in the first couple of rows. He doesn’t like to sit in his carrier for Mass, but is content to be held. He usually falls asleep, which is when we transition from holding a baby to holding a cannon ball.

I enjoy taking him with me on errands and encounter the same conversation with well-meaning older women almost every place I go:
Them: Oh he’s so cute! How old is he?
Me: Almost 5 months.
Them: Oh my! He’s big!
Me. Yes.
Them: And you’re so tiny. I can’t believe he came out of you!

Apparently people forget their tact as their brains put two-and-two together, but it usually just makes me chuckle because sometimes I feel like I’m in the movie Groundhog Day with that conversation.

Dear L.J.,

There was one remaining Size 1 diaper in your diaper cubby. Somehow, that always seemed to be the one we grabbed during a diaper change! I finally threw it out, since you are now much too big for it. Would you believe how hard it was for mommy to throw out one little diaper? It was so small and a reminder of how little you were – and not that long ago. But now we are moving on to bigger things. You are entering your “sweet spot” of infanthood, where every day brings new discoveries and developments. Almost every night you will go to bed having mastered one more skill, be it large or small. Hold on to your hat, Little Man, because Paparazzi Mommy and her ever-present camera are along for the ride. How much fun it will be to look back someday and remember all of your exciting milestones!

I Love You,
Mommy
