Halloween Fun

We had a lot of fun for L.J.’s first Halloween, enjoying several different celebrations. We kicked off with Pizza and Pumpkins at L.J.’s school. It was exactly what it sounded like – decorating pumpkins and then eating pizza. The event was too old for L.J., but we went anyway for the fun and fellowship of it.

Decorating pumpkins was designed neither for infants nor parents. Long tables were set up that stood approximately two feet off the ground. It was the perfect height for the preschool set, but presented some challenges for the parents who were either trying to help or trying to avoid by splattered by excited little Picassos wielding over-loaded paintbrushes.

Our celebrations continued with the Goblins in the Garden event at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. Children were encouraged to come in costume and there were multiple activities set up throughout the gardens.

L.J. was Winnie-the-Pooh for his first Halloween. Winnie-the-Pooh was dressed as a bumblebee. He was so adorable in it! Unfortunately, he was not inclined to agree with how cute and adorable we told him he was. This expression says it all:

It was a nice day outside – a bit cool, but sunny. We walked around for awhile and then checked out a few of the activities. The Junior League was giving out free books to promote literacy, so we picked out a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse book. Toodles! L.J. also decorated a tiny pumpkin, which he promptly tried to eat.

It was a great event! I look forward to going back next year when L.J. is a bit older and able to do more of the activities.

Finally, Halloween culminated with trick-or-treating. Mike was determined to take him out and while I wasn’t as enthusiastic, I wasn’t going to miss out. Well, Mike was right – it ended up being a lot of fun and something we will always remember!

We walked down the street a few blocks to a cul-de-sac that has maybe 15 or so houses. Turns out they turned Halloween into an opportunity for a zombie block party. The whole street was decorated, houses were decorated, children were running about and adults were supervising with wine and beer in hand. It had just gotten dark, it was cool but not cold – perfect trick-or-treating weather!

We took L.J. around to several of the houses; many of the owners were sitting outside handing out candy. We checked out some of the zombie decorations and took a few pictures. All in all, it was a perfect first Halloween trick-or-treating experience for us and for L.J.!
