Personality
L.J. is still our laid-back, happy little camper. However, this month we have started to notice the development of “the opinion.” He’s starting to want to have a say in things! He will push something away if he doesn’t want it and can be quite vocal about what he thinks when playtime is interrupted for a diaper change.
He can be quite chatty at times, though what he is saying is anyone’s guess at this point. He says “Ah” and it means “Hi” – that’s his first and only “word” so far. He also vocalizes “ba” “ga” and “ma” sounds, with “ba” being a definite favorite.
He is very social – he loves to watch other children and people in general. He is very flirty and will work hard to get someone’s attention. He starts by smiling and if that doesn’t work moves to bouncing and then telling them hi. People are generally very obliging about saying hi back to him.
We frequently FaceTime my parents during dinner and so L.J. associates my phone with seeing Nana and/or Grandpa. If I’m talking to my mom on speaker, he stares at the phone with a confused look on his face. He can hear Nana, but where is she??
Playtime
Currently, L.J. really enjoys his musical toys. We took the legs off his LeapFrog table, and he now plays with it all the time. He also still really likes his workbench and his VTech farm.
He still loves his Fisher Price sorter blocks and balls, but we’re seeing his stacking cups and his ring stacker get more and more playing time. He loves to knock over his stacking cups when we build a tower out of them!
His big red dragon continues to be a favorite plaything. I had to laugh because one Sunday afternoon I spent a good half hour sewing up a big hole in the dragon’s neck and then giving him a sponge bath. Yes indeed, that 3’ tall impulse purchase from Costco is much-loved!
L.J. loves going to the park! The swings are his favorite, but he also enjoys the slide. I have mentioned our Little Tikes graveyard playground before; we’ve enjoyed letting him try out the “bigger kid” toys like the push cars and the Cozy Coupe. That park is such a wonderful little bonus in our neighborhood.
He also loves bathtime! He gets excited as soon as you walk into the bathroom (and is quite disappointed if all you’re doing is getting a Kleenex…). He will happily play in the tub as long as we’ll let him. Sometimes for a special treat we’ll let the water run longer than normal – he considers that his own personal water park. I think he is going to love going to the splash pad next summer!
Eating
L.J. is still on acid reflux medicine. We know it’s helping because if we forget a dose he turns into a human volcano after his bottle. Hopefully he will overcome it soon.
He’s still taking four bottles a day, though is starting to slowly decrease his formula consumption. He ranges from 4-6 ounces.
He eats three meals a day, plus an afternoon snack.
We are transitioning away from baby food. He still frequently gets a jar a lunch at school, but gets very little aside from that. I’m happy that it’s been an easy, seamless tradition.
(See Friday’s post for an update on L.J.’s eating.)
Sleeping
One big sleep milestone this month was lowering the crib. It didn’t seem to phase him, so that’s good.
A second big sleep milestone this month was that L.J. learned to sit up in his crib! This resulted in him getting “stuck” a few times because he got up and didn’t know how to get back down. (He does know how to get down; I think he got confused because he was in his crib.)
His third sleep milestone this month was that he started to establish a consistent nap at school! He is finally taking a decent-length nap after lunch. Whew! We still get 2-3 good naps a day at home on the weekends.
Milestones/Firsts
What a big month! This month L.J. learned how to move from lying on his belly into a sitting position. He is now quite good at it!
L.J. also started crawling this month! He has only done a true crawl twice, but he can do it! He still prefers rolling or army crawling to get what/where he wants. Generally, if it’s a toy a few feet away he army crawls; if he wants across the room he rolls.
He is also getting closer to pulling up. He can pretty easily go from a sitting position to his knees. He likes to get up and select toys out of his big toy basket. Or, alternately, he’s discovered that kneeling puts him at the perfect height to swipe contraband off the coffee table.
L.J. has very strong legs and uses them for everything except standing. He still shows very little interest in standing and/or cruising. If you try to get him to stand, he usually lifts his legs up – so he is basically in a sitting position mid-air. The only time we can really get him to stand for any length of time is to put something he isn’t normally allowed to have just out of his reach on the coffee table. (Can we add that to our “Parents of the Year” application?)
He hasn’t sprouted any new teeth this month, but he is currently hard at work on one (or perhaps more).
Dear L.J.,
We’ve reached the home stretch, baby boy. One more month until you officially graduate from “infant” to “toddler”. It doesn’t seem possible. This has by far been the fastest year of my life. It’s baby season among mommy’s friends and acquaintances. Sometimes I see photos of a brand-new little life and I wish that I could rewind the clock just briefly so that I could snuggle tiny little you again. Oh how I am glad that I let you snuggle and nap on mommy all those days when you were newly born! Such sweet, sweet memories. Now that you are bigger the world is much too exciting to sit still – but all that adventure can be tiring. Sometimes mommy gets lucky and you snuggle up close just like you used to. I love it when you do that! While I may sometimes get nostalgic for those fleeting newborn days, I am surely enjoying all of your new milestones and discoveries. Just don’t grow up too fast, ok? I love you more than words.
Love,
Mommy
And, finally, a wordless summation of L.J. at 11-months old:
