Sayonara, Baby Food

IMG_2491

At almost 11 months, we are just about done with baby food. I still frequently send a jar to school with him for lunch, but he is primarily eating table food. If he sees “regular” food on the table, he typically refuses to eat jarred baby food. He throws an absolute fit! We are happy to oblige his preference, as baby food is both expensive and bland. Yay for a seamless transition!

We are fortunate that, at this point, L.J. is not a picky eater. He’s a big fan of food in general and eagerly tries new things. It’s interesting to give him something new because some of his expressions with the first bite are priceless!

Breakfast is always Gerber oatmeal – he loves it and I don’t foresee changing that anytime soon. Lunch varies, but more often than not he gets Boar’s Head lunch meat and cheese, along with a fruit or a veggie. Snack is some type of starch – waffle, Puffs, Cheerios. (They specifically request that at school because they use snack time to practice their fine motor skills.)

I’ve been trying to plan our dinners with L.J. in mind. He generally either eats what we are eating, or eats a modified version of it. I’m trying to avoid the ubiquitous “toddler foods” as long as I possibly can!

In addition to his meals and snack, he is still drinking 4-6 ounces of formula four times a day. I don’t have a clue how we are going to start transitioning him out of that routine next month…

If L.J. particularly likes something, he chews and says “Mmm!” at the same time. I’ve got to capture that on video! It’s really cute.

It’s a little hard to discern his favorite foods because he eats just about everything, but there are a few standouts:

  • Grilled cheese
  • Green beans (probably his absolute favorite)
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Bread of any type
  • Pumpkin-flavored things (bread, muffins, pancakes)
  • Pot Roast

We are thankful we have such an easy eater. Mike and I are both somewhat picky in different ways, so we were concerned L.J. would be the same way. Our biggest challenge now is to try to expand our own palates so that we can keep L.J. on a good, healthy and varied eating plan.

P.S. – We won’t be trying spaghetti again for awhile. Oh. My. Goodness.
