My mom’s friends arranged a surprise 60th birthday party for her this weekend
and we traveled up to Greenville to join in the celebration. We were excited for
the surprise and thrilled for my mom because the whole family was joining in the
fun.
We left after dinner on Friday night, patting ourselves on our backs for our
smart planning – L.J. would sleep the majority of the way, giving Mike and me a
quiet car ride. Smart planning – hahahaha – we have a toddler. That doesn’t
exist anymore.
Apparently someone was so excited about going to Nana and Poppa’s for the
weekend that he talked/squirmed/whined and was generally obnoxious for all but
the last half hour of the trip. That last half hour – finally…finally – he
passed out mid-whine in an utterly exhausted stupor. Toddler for the win.
Saturday morning we visited the Greenville Zoo. Its small size was perfectly
suited to the attention span of a toddler. And the amount of heat the adults
could tolerate at the end of July. The giraffes were particularly interesting,
coming to the edge of their pen to graze and demonstrating that their knees bend
backwards, not forwards like human knees do.
After lunch and a lazy afternoon, it was time to get ready for the party. Mom
knew something was planned, but didn’t know any of the details. She was highly
unsuccessful at getting even a snippet of information from any of us. Kids for
the win.
The celebration was held at a dueling piano bar in downtown Greenville called
Jack ‘n Diane’s. I had no idea what to expect, but it was so much fun! We had an
area sectioned off for the party, so it was perfect for enjoying the show and
mingling with friends. I've mentioned my parent's group of friends before, but
it bears repeating: they are awesome and so much fun to hang out with! The
pianists were great. It’s amazing how much skill they have to have to perform –
improv, comedy and musical performance all rolled into one.
At one point the pianists said that a $20 tip could sit anyone on the piano
to be celebrated and sufficiently embarrassed. My brothers were first in line,
and up mom went. She was a great sport about it!
We had a really fun night and would definitely like to go back again. It was
great to celebrate mom and great for Mike and me to have a pseudo date night at
the same time!
My dad helped arrange a babysitter for L.J. for the evening. This was L.J.'s
second non-family babysitter and once again he did really well! We thought that
he would have a total meltdown when he realized Poppa was leaving the house
without him, but we saved a special toy he'd been asking about all day for the
moment of departure. Successful distraction!
(Random, but I felt so bad when the babysitter arrived! She was a bit early
and the house was completely chaotic with everyone getting ready. And by
everyone, I mean the 8 adults I failed to mention would be there when she
arrived. I'm sure she was completely overwhelmed at first!)
Sunday morning we ended the weekend with a birthday brunch at a local
restaurant. Great finish to a great weekend!
