As you might recall, L.J. won the 2014 Georgia State Great Baby Race with much fanfare and celebration. It was such a fun day for our family and, given Mike’s line of work, the celebration continued long past the game and made it into the evening news.
Mike was bound and determined that Hannah would participate in this year’s race and secure another 3-foot tall trophy for the family. We all said it was a pipe dream; there was no way a second baby – especially our little spitfire – was not going to be walking by 14 months.
Mike did not listen. Mike did not care. He practiced with her in the hallway. He begged her not to start walking. He waited, tensely, as the big day approached.
The big day arrived…and Hannah was not yet walking. She could officially participate! By this point I’m not really sure if Mike or L.J. was more excited.
We made it to halftime at the game, and then it was time for the big race. I sized up the competition in the back hallway. Several active looking boy babies, a few nimble looking baby girls. Hannah was clearly the oldest of the bunch.
We lined up on the starting line. This time I held Hannah at the gate and Mike went to the finish line at mid-court. We used Gatorade as a bribe for L.J.; this time, well, we used L.J. as the bribe!
The buzzer sounded and the babies were off! (Well, most of them anyway) Hannah took off like a rocket and, despite a momentarily distraction mid-way through, zoomed toward Mike and L.J.
At one point it looked like she had some competition from one of the boys, but it was fleeting. She crushed the competition and crawled to a decisive victory! It was a family sweep! Both Holmes children won the race! The words “family dynasty” may have been uttered by a few of Mike’s colleagues. (Ok, maybe they were slightly biased…)
Go Hannah, Go!!! We were SO proud of her and it was once again such a fun and memorable moment for our family!
