I picked L.J. up from school on Tuesday, his first full day wearing his helmet, and his teacher said they had taken the helmet off at 3:30 because there were red spots on his head. I wasn’t concerned, as we had noticed some redness over the weekend as he was adjusting to it.
Until I saw L.J.
Poor baby had two big, red welts on the side of his head where the helmet had rubbed. They looked so sore and painful! I’m thankful that his teachers were monitoring him closely and noticed the welts shortly after they appeared.
The area the welts appeared was the same area where we had been noticing (and keeping an eye on) some overall redness over the past few days. Looking back, L.J.’s fussiness on Sunday was probably because the helmet was rubbing him and it hurt, not because it was just a bit uncomfortable. I am so thankful Mike and I gave him plenty of breaks when he was fussy, rather than adhere strictly to the helmet orientation schedule!
I took him back on Thursday and they shaved away some of the foam. I also got permission for his teachers to take it off during daily afternoon outside time, as we all think the heat/sweating is what triggered the welts.
He resumed wearing the helmet on Friday and we can tell a noticeable difference in his demeanor now versus last weekend. He is much calmer and doesn’t seem to mind the helmet that much. He’s still adjusting, but it’s going a lot more smoothly!
