L.J.’s New Helmet

We picked L.J.’s helmet up this week. He will have a few days of adjusting to it (wearing/not wearing for various periods) and then will begin wearing it 23 hours a day.

The orthotist made it look like a piece of cake to put it on and take it off. Let’s just say “piece of cake” does not describe my first attempt to put it on. However, I quickly figured out it’s a two-person job and since then it’s been pretty easy to get on and off.

What does L.J. think of his helmet? In typical L.J. style, the helmet itself doesn’t appear to bother him. He fusses when it’s put on, but once it’s adjusted he’s been fine. (Caveat: He’s only worn it for a few hours so far…) It has affected his playtime, though. He’s having to somewhat relearn how to pick up and move his head around when he’s on his tummy, and that’s been frustrating for him.

His helmet has a hard plastic exterior shell and a foam lining. It’s not supposed to get wet and we have to clean it daily with rubbing alcohol. L.J.’s going to have the cleanest head around…

I inadvertently captured another view of the flatness on the right side of his head when I took a picture of L.J. sleeping on his stomach. You can also see in this shot how his forehead slopes downward a little bit – that is called “vaulting” and also something the helmet will help correct.
