Stats

Weight: 23 lbs., 3 oz. (95th percentile)
Height: 29” (75th percentile)
Diaper Size: Size 3 in Pampers
Clothes: 12 mos. clothes/jammies. About to switch to 18 mos.

L.J. had his 9-month well-visit last week and the pediatrician said that while he is quite big for his age, he is proportional since he is both heavy and tall. We never, ever would have guessed that we’d have a baby in the 95th percentile, but we love every ounce of him!

Personality/Playtime

L.J. continues to be a mellow, easygoing baby who is easily entertained and rarely fussy. People frequently comment about his calm temperament when we are out in public with him.

Don’t mistake his calm personality with a lazy baby though! He is everywhere all at once these days. He doesn’t sit still for more than a few moments at a time and is a tiny tornado with his toys. The best word to describe L.J. this month is busy!

He has clear favorites among his toys, with his Fisher Price sorting bucket/balls still topping the list. Teething toys are a must right now, so his Vulli teethers, Sophie and Mini Monkey are always nearby. New this month, we introduced the VTech learning walker and he will sit and play with his “farm” for 10-15 minutes at a stretch. That’s an eternity in baby time!

L.J. loves anything that can be used as a bucket. He doesn’t know how to put things into a bucket yet, but delights in dumping items out. He is also learning cause-and-effect and can frequently be seen banging objects together.

He is now a confident sitter and can maneuver from a sitting position to his belly. He can now lean, twist and stretch while sitting and not tumble over. Crawling is on the horizon, but we’re not quite there yet. He is slowly starting to figure out the concept and is very, very eager to master this skill!

For right now, though, he continues to get anywhere and everywhere by rolling. He can change directions while rolling and he’s fast…he keeps us on our toes! One funny thing I want to remember – when he is rolling, if he thinks he is going to run into something he will hunch his shoulders and squeeze his eyes shut to brace for the expected impact.

Eating

We experienced a few eating challenges this month, a first for L.J. He began spitting up repeatedly after eating. He was like a human volcano – just sitting on the floor and periodically erupting. It definitely wasn’t normal. We switched his formula to the low spit-up version and started acid reflux medicine twice daily. These changes have made a 180 in the amount of spit-up we’re seeing.

We’ve continued to introduce new foods to him. Carbs (Puffs, crackers, pasta) were easy first-foods, but our pediatrician advised us to limit those foods due to his size. We’ve been focusing on fruits and vegetables as much as possible, trying to limit his carbs to an afternoon snack. Little Man loves, loves, loves Gerber Puffs and will eat as many as we’ll allow him!

He is not a picky eater at all. It’s hard to say what his favorites are, but he does seem to particularly enjoy squash and green beans. His favorite fruit is probably mandarin oranges.

L.J. has mastered the straw! As a result, we’re having a hard time with sippee cups because he doesn’t understand that you have to tip them up. His pediatrician said it’s perfectly fine to skip sippee cups altogether, so that’s likely the route we’ll take.

Sleeping

Still sleeping like a champ at night! L.J. is usually in bed by 7:30 and wakes up between 6:15-7:00. We have no complaints about that!!

He’s still a cat-napper at school, but naps well for us on the weekends. His teachers say he is the only baby in the class who can fall asleep without assistance. Good job buddy :)

Milestones/Firsts

L.J. is now an independent sitter and mobile, with rolling being his current mode of transportation.

L.J. also had his first table food this month.

His upper two teeth have started to come in and so has his left eye tooth, making 5 total teeth.

Dear L.J.,

You are so much fun! Sometimes I think Daddy and I delight in your new accomplishments as much as you do. Nine months was marked by increasing mobility. Your teachers say you can cross the room in the blink of an eye – sometimes faster than the crawlers – and we have no doubt of that! You are our pint-size explorer and busy as can be. With your curious, playful personality and calm, sweet temperament, Daddy and I are so blessed with wonderful, remarkable you. We love you L.J.!

Love,
Mommy
