Landon – 17 Months

The formal chair pictures aren’t working…we tried again last night. To capture L.J.’s smiles you have to catch him in his element! Last night that meant following him around with a camera (an hour past bedtime) while he ran around like we’d fed him Pixi sticks for dinner. Where do they get their energy from?!

I suppose this is the last month we can really refer to L.J. in months. Soon he will be one-and-a-half and then two and then…nope, not going to think about how fast my baby is growing!

We have seen L.J. blossom at 17 months. We had his first parent-teacher conference and he got a glowing report. It was very reassuring to hear his teachers say that he is smart, developmentally on-target and (usually) well-behaved.

One thing his teacher mentioned was that L.J. listens well, but he generally prefers to do things when and how he wants to do them. This made me laugh because it reminded me of my brother. Apparently they have more than their name in common!

In the past few weeks we have seen advances in L.J.’s communication skills. He is actively trying to communicate what he wants. We have to remind ourselves to slow down and make sure we give him a chance to “explain.” It’s a learning process for all of us!

He has a few new words, which at this point are still only intelligible to mommy and daddy. These include “thank you,” “shoes,” and “socks.”

His newest understandable-to-everyone word is “Bye!” I have this on camera and need to post it because it is the most endearing thing ever. He waves while he’s saying it, and he says it exactly like you’d expect a rich old Southern lady to say it. Cutest. Thing. Ever.

Crawling is a thing of the past; L.J. is now walking everywhere! He loves to walk down the front walk and check the mailbox. He loves to climb but (so far and fingers crossed) has not starting climbing all over furniture/tables/things he’s not supposed to.

Eating has been the bane of our existence this month. Maybe it’s related to his ears; maybe it’s just L.J. being a toddler – either way he has become quite picky. His idea of a perfect meal would be a roll, cheese cubes and mandarin oranges. In lieu of that, pizza and spaghetti are always acceptable options. Anything outside of that is anyone’s guess. He does not like most meat or vegetables and fruit is a 50/50 shot. On the other hand, he will eat almost any variety of cheese, carbohydrate or the perfect marriage of the two known as macaroni and cheese. I’ve started making smoothies in the morning, which is helping all three of us up our fruit, dairy and protein intake.

At 17 months L.J. is busy discovering. He’ll work hard to figure something out, asking for help if he can’t figure it out. (read: throws whatever it is he’s playing with in your lap.) His favorite toy is a set of nesting chickens that also stack (like the Russian dolls). He also has two exceedingly annoying talking cars – he likes it best when they’re both talking at the same time. Outside time and riding toys are also at the top of his list! His interest in reading is continuing to grow. He has a time limit of about one page if you’re reading to him, but he will sit for 5-10 minutes on his own looking at books. Alphabet books still rule the roost!
