This year L.J.’s party theme was inspired by one of his favorite things: fire trucks!
We had a relatively small crowd with a few buddies and Mike’s family, which turned out to be a blessing. The week (two weeks actually) leading up to his party were completely chaotic so it’s a wonder it came together at all. Thankfully I had planned most of it out in advance.
We used last year’s successful “playtime and lunch” format and it once again worked out well. The kids had a great time!
The biggest hit at this year’s party was the pinata. The kids loved it! I turned a regular pinata into a pull-string pinata more suited to toddler/preschool strength and dexterity. Despite my hard work, the dads didn’t consider it a “real” pinata unless a sturdy stick was involved. A stick was procured and each child got to take a few whacks at it. (Preschoolers with a big stick. In my dining room. Three feet from my china cabinet. Brilliant, dads.)
As promised, the dads provided careful supervision and no heads, furniture or glass were broken. Nor was the pinata for that matter. (ahem, I told you so…)
Best picture of the day:
While the kids thought the stick was pretty cool, they were equally impressed with the pull strings that actually procured candy from the hanging fire truck. Lollipops were instantly unwrapped and I’m pretty sure Ra-Ra stuck a half dozen Hershey kisses in his mouth before his parents could intervene. He was one proud-looking chipmunk!
Everyone enjoyed a simple lunch that was themed to the party – alas, I didn’t manage to make the cute placards that proclaimed water bottles as “fire extinguishers” or the fruit bowl as “fiery fruit.” Oh well.
(Oh and the cute cookie cutter PBJ sandwiches? Do not try that at home. It was not easy. I was cursing midway through making them.)
After lunch we all enjoyed cupcakes and L.J. opened his packages.
We all get by with a little help from our friends…
And after everyone left, it was time for a post-party crash.
