Height: 25 inches
Diaper Size: Size 1 in Pampers

Personality

Month 4 was great! At around 10 weeks Hannah decided that Earth was an ok place to be, and she has been enjoying life ever since. She’s pretty easygoing during the day, and most evenings are a little calmer now. She’s our sweet little peanut.

She is very interactive! She smiles, coos, “talks” and laughs. Her laughs are still largely reserved for L.J., but Mike and I have been the lucky recipients a few times. She’s also starting to interact with other people, though generally makes them work for one of her pretty smiles. It’s hilarious, actually. She’ll stare someone down with a poker face until they talk or coo or make a face at her, and then her whole face will light up. I love seeing people’s reactions to her smiles and her dimples.

Playtime

Hannah got her first doll this month, a brightly-colored blonde princess who crinkles. She is obsessed. The manufacturer named the doll ‘Sophie’, which really lacked foresight given the popularity of a rubber giraffe with the same name. Sophie the doll usually just gets called Dolly.

She could take or leave the play mat we have (L.J. didn’t like it either), but loves the piano play mat my co-worker gave to us. She has started to bat at toys and tries to get a rattle to her mouth if you give it to her. She’s still at the beginning stages of those skills.

Hannah’s favorite “spot” continues to be the blue bouncer. She vastly prefers that $5 consignment sale find to any of the fancier options we have. We ought to just rename it “Hannah’s La-Z Boy.” Thankfully she still has some growing room in it; not sure what we’re going to do when she’s too big for it!

Her favorite toy is her hands, which are constantly in her mouth. She’s transitioned almost entirely to thumb sucking, rarely showing interest in the paci anymore. Poor Raffi and Mini Monkey have been tossed aside, but maybe she’ll turn them into a chew toy like L.J. did. She often snoozes with one hand/thumb in her mouth and the other one clamped on top to prevent her thumb from escaping.

Developmentally, she can now push her head and chest up while on her stomach. She’s even started pulling legs under her and tried to propel herself forward! Hannah also rolled over for the first time this month (stomach to back). She can keep her head (mostly) steady for short periods in the Bumbo. She can turn 180 degrees in her crib. The doctor said she is ahead of the curve with some of these skills – especially her trying to move – and right on track with others.

Hannah has much more trunk and neck control than L.J. did at her age. Sister Bear is bound and determined to have a birds-eye view of what’s going on around her. If she’s fussing to fuss, it’s likely because we either had the gall to set her down or she can’t see what’s happening.

Eating

Her current formula and reflux medicine are still working, whew. We’ve added a probiotic to further help her tummy and we’ve seen a positive difference with that.

She still spits up constantly and profusely. The amount of laundry such a small person can generate is astounding. We’ve been known to go through almost a half dozen each bibs and burp cloths a day.

She’s eating 4 ounces every 2-2.5 hours during the day. The pediatrician said that’s not uncommon for babies her age who are already sleeping through the night. We’ll take it.

Sleeping

She’s starting to establish more of a nap schedule during the day. She’s continuing to sleep through the night. We’ve had some interruption in that due to her cold, but that’s to be expected.

We just transitioned her to her crib a few days ago. What a tough milestone for mommy! I liked having her next to my bed and had no desire to move her, but it was necessary before she became old enough to form opinions on the matter (which I think is around 4 months). She’s been doing perfectly fine with the change.

She sleeps on her side, which is really cute.

Milestones/Firsts

Hannah got bronchiolitis this month, which made her feel just awful. She’s been on an inhaler and just switched to a breathing machine. She just can’t quite kick it, so hopefully the machine will do the trick.

She rolled over for the first time!

She rode in the Ergo carrier for the first time, finally big enough (just barely) to be comfortable in it.

She went to her first birthday party, celebrating Didi’s 2nd birthday.

Letter to Hannah

Dear Hannah,

Well, hello! We delighted in seeing the sweet side of your personality emerge this month. Smiles for days, chattering at your brother and taking in everything around you with wide-eyed wonderment. It is so much fun rediscovering the world through the eyes of a little one!

Everything is new for you right now, and the littlest things provide entertainment. I entertained you for 20 minutes at the doctor just by crinkling the brightly-colored wipes package for you. You sure do love things that crinkle!

You absolutely love to be outside. I want to remember the way you tilt your head up and sniff the air when a breeze blows by and just your utter contentment when we take you out for a stroll or sit you on the screened porch. You even got to try the swing recently! You found it most satisfactory.

Four months – one-third of the way through your first year. Each day with you is one that I treasure. I love you so much, sweet girl.

Love,
Mommy
