Mike and I are very ready to move out of our apartment, especially with a baby on the way. Plus, our apartment complex is using the state of the housing market as justification for exorbitant rent increases each year. Lovely.
While we are chomping at the bit to move, we aren’t going to jump into home ownership just because we dislike being in an apartment. (Being raised to be financially savvy certainly has it’s perks, but it can be really frustrating when you are eager to change your current situation!) Atlanta’s housing/traffic debacle is also preventing us from moving forward with actively starting a house hunt.
(This is my number-one soapbox issue with Atlanta, so let me see if I can phrase this objectively.)
Our jobs are not close to each other, and Mike works downtown. In terms of housing, this means that we have two options:
- Purchase a new, reasonably-priced house in the northern suburbs that is closer to family and offers excellent public schools. And comes with an hour-plus commute each way.
- Purchase an older, more expensive house closer-in that is farther from family and will (most likely) require private school tuition. But, the commute would be reasonable (35 min avg.).
Can you see how we are very frustrated by the position that we are in? The natural response would be, “Why don’t you rent a home in your area?” We would love to – but the inventory is very low and the prices are very high.
Researching houses in a hobby of mine (got that from my mom!),so each day this week we’ll take a closer look at what I mentioned above. I’ll show a house that is an example of our ideal house, a house in our ideal location and two houses in areas we’re considering that have some combination of ideal house/ideal location.
