Letters to Landon - Month One

LJ1Month

Dear Landon,

Welcome to the world baby boy!

You are a big newborn! You dwarfed the other babies in the nursery and you never had that squished, old-man look that so many newborns have. Your adorable chipmunk cheeks were present from the moment you were born!

Your one month appointment was today and you did great. You were measured, weighed and examined. Mommy asked the doctor lots of questions!

Weight: 10 lbs 14 oz (75%)
Height: 21.5 in (25-50%)
Head: 39 inches (85-95%)

My you have a huge head! I was not surprised by your weight, but it still made me laugh to think about how tiny little me had great big you!

We have been spoiled by your easygoing temperament. You fuss if you want to be held or are hungry, but otherwise you are a calm and content baby. You love to be held and are a champion snuggler. Holding you against my chest with my cheek resting on your soft, fuzzy head…I want to do it all day long. I cherish these moments when you are so tiny because I know they will be fleeting.

You are especially partial to daddy. It melts my heart to see the bond you two have already established with each other. He adores you and you think he hung the moon.

You had an eventful first month, celebrating your first Christmas and your first New Year’s. It was so special to us that you arrived in December because the holidays mean cherished family memories. You are the first grandbaby and first nephew on both sides…so you can imagine the fan club that welcomed you. You are so incredibly loved Landon James.

Aside from family, we have not had many visitors nor have we taken you out in public. Mommy is paranoid about flu season and your pediatrician also recommended that we keep you home as much as possible until you reach two months.

We have enjoyed watching your personality start to develop and emerge. You have the most hilarious assortment of facial expressions, and mommy’s favorite is your Mr. Magoo face. You wrinkle up your forehead, squeeze your eyes shut and purse your lips…and look just like Mr. Magoo.

You also come complete with lots of little noises that you especially love to showcase after we put you to bed. Grunts, hiccups, sneezes, squeaks and “singing”…you never fail to entertain us. Mommy’s favorite is the noise you make when you are about to start crying – it sounds like a car engine trying to turn over. I’ve prevented more than a few outbursts because that sound is so recognizable!

You are a big fan of mealtime and frequently (and noisily) guzzle your bottle like it’s the last one on earth. You eat 4 ounces at a time and eat every three hours. You are equally a fan of your pacifier and sometimes wear mommy’s arm out at night as I reach over to re-insert it for what seems like the hundredth time. I can’t wait until you are big enough to put it in yourself!

You can’t stand having your outfit or your diaper changed. If you are yelling loud enough to wake the dead, it’s almost guaranteed to be because we are in the middle of changing a dirty diaper. On the flip side, you have changed your mind about bathtime and it’s now one of your favorite activities. You love when we run the warm water over you like a little shower.

You are a good little sleeper, but not particularly fond of daytime naps. You typically take 1-2 longer naps a day – though the time varies every day – and multiple little “cat naps.” During the day you prefer (and often demand) to nap in mommy’s arms. Not something I want to encourage, but right now sleep deprivation tends to win out over establishing good nap habits. At night you sleep in your Rock ‘n Play in our room. Your doctor said today that it’s time to move you to your crib. I don’t know if mommy is quite ready for that! At this point I would say you tolerate your crib – you aren’t the biggest fan yet.

And, finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t comment on your hands. Baby boy, your hands are your favorite! They are almost constantly up by your face and you are working so hard to learn how to intentionally get them in your mouth. They frequently get in the way when you eat and your poor face has been victim to multiple fingernails. You don’t like to be swaddled at all – because, of course, that means your hands aren’t free.

Landon, we have loved getting to know you this month. You bring us great joy and we love you to pieces!!

Love,
Mommy
