I decided to give the modern mom buzzword – “sensory experience” – a go last week. Read: Mike had been out of town for a week and I was desperate for diversions!
I’d heard of letting toddlers paint with pudding the bath, but we didn’t have any pudding and I didn’t really want to test out the effects of that much sugar 20 minutes before bedtime. So we resorted to baby oatmeal! It’s been languishing in the pantry since L.J. doesn’t eat it anymore.
I gathered up a few bath-friendly toys to hide in the oatmeal:
Then mixed up the oatmeal so it was a slushy consistency. It wasn’t quite deep enough for the toys to hide…oh well!
L.J. spent the first few minutes trying to figure out why he was in a dry bathtub with his toys immersed in a large pan of mushy stuff. “What is this?!?”
“Oh, it’s my oatmeal!” Once he figured that out, he sampled a few handfuls. “Hmm…this stuff is pretty dull compared to what I’m eating now!”
He played with it for about 10 minutes before finally dumping it out and sitting in it. Thankfully, I’m happy to report that baby oatmeal goes down the drain without issue.
Overall, I’d say he was “mildly interested” in my oatmeal sensory project. I’m curious to try it again with a more enticing food like pudding or Jell-O, as well as being able to hide the toys so he has to discover them. Note to self: remember to pick a non-staining color!
