R.I.P. Thai Food

This week was one for the record books. To recap:

  • Mike was traveling for work
  • I was sick as a dog
  • We had several “snow days” with little to none of the white fluffy stuff

If you connect the dots, I was at home sick trying to meet work deadlines while simultaneously taking care of a toddler – by myself. Said toddler was a.) none too keen that I had to work and thus not devote full attention to him and b.) not understanding why he couldn’t go to school and play with his BFF Ra-Ra.

It was a very difficult week. I was sick, frustrated at the situation and feeling like a miserable failure as a mother. I mean, weren’t we supposed to be having extra bonding time and making Pinterest-y projects like Jell-O play dough? Right.

Friday dawned and I woke up to the sound of the school bus roaring up the hill. Sunlight was streaming into my room. Holy cow it was 7:30 and L.J. was still asleep!! Granted he was next to me…but asleep. The day was off to a promising start.

I had a nice little schedule planned out for us, starting with touring two area schools. I was very impressed with one nearby and think it will be a great fit for L.J. Whew, one stressful decision made. Now we just have to wait for a spot to open up…

Then – cue the Hallelujah chorus – my parents arrived mid-afternoon. The Grandparent Support Team was here!!! You have no idea how happy/relieved I was to see them pull into the driveway.

My brother and his wife invited us to dinner near their home in VaHigh. We had the pleasure of driving through Atlanta’s stupendous rush hour traffic, giving my parents about 423 reminders why they will never move back to Atlanta.

And this is where the Thai food comes in. I love Thai food and have enjoyed it many times over the years, always sticking to the mild side of the menu. Towards the end of the meal I noticed my top lip was feeling kind of funny – a little like the Novocain you get at the dentist. I went to the restroom and looked in the mirror. Holy crap, I looked like a duck! Something wasn’t right.

I’ve never had an allergic reaction to food before, so figured must have just been an irritant of some sort. My brother gave me some Benadryl before we drove home and I figured that would be the end of it. Haha, delusional thinking after the week I’d had.

Woke up Saturday morning, reached for my phone and my hands weren’t working right. They were incredibly swollen. Got up to go check my duck face and my feet weren’t working right. They were incredibly swollen, too. And I itched like crazy.

My mom and I headed off to urgent care, where I was the lucky recipient of two shots in my derriere. I was also one of the lucky patients who had an immediate reaction to the two shots. I felt very lightheaded and nauseous – it was like being pregnant again! – and so was curled up on the exam room table with graham crackers and juice while they watched my blood pressure do a little dance for thirty minutes. Good times.

Finally I stabilized and they let me go home. That’s about the time the hives showed up – my skin was less red and in its place I had huge red welts on my thighs, rear and upper arms. I also could not walk without gym shoes on my feet because they hurt so badly.

Things started to improve Saturday evening. Most of the hives had gone away and I could walk a little without shoes. The swelling had gone down a bit in my hands and feet – though still can’t get my wedding rings off.

The doctor said it could take several days or up to a week to be back to normal. Sure enough, this morning I woke up itching like crazy and covered in hives. They came and went throughout the day – one spot would start to clear up and another patch would appear. It will be interesting to see what happens over the next few days. Back to work tomorrow; I’m praying they don’t end up on my face!

Needless to say, I think I’ll be crossing Thai food off my list from now on.
