On L.J.’s birthday, we picked him up early from school and spent the afternoon at the Georgia Aquarium. We’d been eager for him to be old enough to “get it” since it’s not the cheapest admission ticket in town.
We thought L.J. would be awed by the big exhibits and colorful creatures, but in reality he was was a bit overwhelmed and frightened of the biggest tanks. The fact that he is not a fan of dimly lit spaces (see also: half the aquarium) and was lacking in the nap department did not help matters. Note close-at-hand Baba in the pictures below.
On the plus side, 2 p.m. on a Thursday is a great time to visit the aquarium! The school field trips were done for the day and we pretty much had the run of the place. It was wonderful being able to go at our own pace and not have to jockey for viewing space.
There were two exhibits that L.J. really enjoyed: the curious penguins and the playful river otters. We went back and forth between these exhibits several times. Penguins are now one of L.J.’s new “things” – he points them out when he sees pictures and he is obsessed with his penguin humidifier.
Another benefit to lack of crowds was total viewing time. We were able to get through the aquarium in about two hours, which was appropriate for L.J.’s attention span.
Mommy and daddy had a blast! We love any opportunity to go to the Georgia Aquarium and had a great time revisiting our favorite exhibits.
Afterwards we let L.J. run around in the grassy area outside the aquarium for a couple minutes. We took his 2-year pictures in the striped ornament, and snapped a family selfie, too. Look at our faces – too cold to not have coats on!
Our birthday gift to L.J. was a red Radio Flyer wagon. He loves it! He was so excited when we brought it out, and of course we had to go take a test drive with his buddy once it was assembled!
