Merry & Bright: Office Holiday Party

The stars aligned just right for my company’s holiday party: Mike was home that evening and we found a babysitter for L.J.

We were absolutely, completely giddy at the prospect of getting dressed up in fancy clothes and going out all by ourselves for a celebratory evening.

The key part of this story is the fact that we left L.J. with a babysitter he did not know for the very first time. She was a sweet girl recommended to us by the family of our neighborhood sitters, and I liked her immediately. I cautioned her that L.J. would likely act as if he was being burned at the stake when we left, but would probably be fine after a few minutes.

We get home, introduce her…and L.J. runs up and gives her a hug! Seriously?!? We were shocked speechless. He really liked her and barely noticed when we left. We were so relieved!

Mike and I enjoyed a wonderful evening. The venue was gorgeous, the food delicious and the company excellent. I love that I work in an office with such great camaraderie.

When we got home the sitter said that L.J. had done wonderfully and hadn’t cried at all. In fact, the next morning he asked about her and wanted to know if she could play. Suffice it to say, our first babysitting experience was a great one!

(Also worth noting – after many years babysitting, it was really weird being the parent instead of the babysitter. I remember the slight awkwardness of meeting a new family for the first time. I myself felt awkward – especially when I went in to meet her parents dressed to the nines – and wanting to make a good impression and leave all the right information.)

(Also worth noting – I either got paid ridiculously well to babysit in high school or rates really haven’t changed in 15 years.)
