L.J. at Two Years:
L.J. is pronouncing words much more clearly and is adding new words to his vocabulary daily. Two- and three-word phrases are becoming more common than one-word requests.
He is starting to learn the alphabet song and to count to 10. If you sing the song and/or start counting, he will chime in. We’re still a ways off from understanding or recognizing these things though.
L.J. does recognize certain kid songs and will ask for them by name. “Baa Baa Black Sheep” and “Itsy Bitsy Spider” are favorites.
He can walk, run and climb, but can’t yet jump. He can make the motion but can’t get his feet off the ground.
He has a basic understanding of the weather, which is something they review each day at school. He can tell you if it’s raining and can point out clouds, sun and the moon.
I think his imaginative play is still mostly mimicking us, but he does love to play with his basket of matchbox cars and sets them up various different ways.
We are seeing a lot of emulation in his behavior overall. He loves to help mommy and daddy and is so proud when he is given a job to do. The look on his face when he got to help unload the dishwasher was priceless!
L.J. is very social and delights in being around his friends. He asks for “War-War” and “Ra-Ra” every morning when he wakes up, and multiple times a day on the weekends. His teachers have commented that he is a friend to all his classmates and loves playing together in a group.
He loves playtime and one of his most-used phrases is that he wants to play. (“I one pay!”) He also would probably happily live outside in a tent, as he asks to go outside constantly. His favorite outside activity is swinging at the park.
L.J. is a bookworm. He really enjoys his books, especially Goodnight Moon, any of his transportation-themed booked and Pete the Cat.
He is a problem-solver and will stay engaged with a task until he figures it out. If it’s something beyond his skill level he gets very frustrated. He doesn’t want help – he wants to do it all by himself!
He watches one show and one show only on TV. Bubble Guppies or bust. And we have three dozen some odd episodes on DVR but he only watches two of them. On repeat. He has gone from watching a few minutes at a time to sitting through a whole episode. And oh, the drama when the episode ends.
L.J. has become very attached to his comfort object, a snuggly blue blanket called “Baba.” He will share most anything except Baba. He is also attached to his Aden & Anais blankets – also referred to as “babas” – but not to the same degree as his blue Baba.

Challenges at Two Years:
We are really struggling with how to get L.J. to sleep through the night. He wakes up almost every night and it’s taking its toll on all of us! He also typically only wants daddy in the middle of the night.
L.J. is having a hard time transitioning to one weekend nap at home. He’s somewhat outgrown two naps, but can’t yet make it through the day with just one. He needs a nap + a “rest” period.
Ending favorite activities can be challenging. It helps to give him a few verbal “heads-up” – but telling him it’s time to put his toys up or get out of the bath tub can trigger a meltdown.
Eating nutritious meals is a big struggle. L.J. would happily subsist on Honey Nut cheerios, chicken nuggets, rolls and cheese. We’ve resorted to buying squeeze pouches so that he eats fruits and veggies with his dinner.
